Imagine being screamed at throughout the course of your work day; strangers shouting insults and constantly berating you. How would you feel? Would you put up with that?

Sadly, on way too many of their work days, our referees are subjected to this abhorrent behavior. Before our games begin, let’s remember that our referees are someone’s son, daughter, sister, brother, husband or wife. They are doing the best they can at a very difficult job. Most are young teenagers and this is their very first job.

There is a severe referee shortage in our area and verbal abuse is the number one reason. Until we all commit to giving them a better working environment, the pool of available referees will continue to shrink.

It is easy to become swept up in the excitement and competition of the games. However, this is youth soccer. Youth. Soccer. Please remember that we are all role models and how we conduct ourselves in front of our children speaks volumes. Please remember the code of conduct that you signed and refrain from criticizing or addressing the referees. Please help your player’s coach by reminding your fellow spectators to behave appropriately. GHSC has a zero tolerance policy regarding abuse of any sort and it will be strictly enforced.

We are thrilled to get back on the field. Let’s all do our part to make it a positive, enjoyable experience for everyone.

Thank you,

GHSC Board of Directors
